How to identify the signs of retinoblastoma?

Retinoblastoma is often diagnosed when someone notices something unusual in a child’s eye. Early detection saves lives.

White reflex
“cat’s eye”

A white or yellowish reflex, known as leukocoria, which can be seen when taking a photo with flash or even in daylight.

In our case, we noticed the white reflex when a ray of sunlight hit Lua’s little face.

Strabismus

When the eyes do not appear to be looking in the same direction, this can also be a sign of retinoblastoma. Strabismus may be mild, with only one eye slightly misaligned.

In our daughter Lua, this symptom was subtle and did not appear all the time, but it was there.

Other less common signs and symptoms

• Decreased vision
• Irregular eye movements
• Eye pain
• Redness in the white part of the eyes
• Different color in each iris

Our story

Even without any symptoms, make it a habit to take children to an ophthalmologist once a year, starting at birth.

Eye health in childhood should also be a priority.

What is retinoblastoma?

• It is a type of cancer that affects young children and is more common in infants.

• Approximately 90% of cases are diagnosed before the child reaches 5 years of age.

‭• It is a malignant tumor that develops in the retina, the inner part of the eye.

• The disease may affect one eye, known as unilateral retinoblastoma, or both eyes, known as bilateral retinoblastoma.

‭• When diagnosed early and properly treated, it can reach a 90% cure rate, including preservation of vision.

• When diagnosed late, it can cause blindness and may even be fatal.

The earlier a child is diagnosed, the greater the chances of curing childhood eye cancer.

Who we are

Hello, we are Daiana and Tiago Leifert. Our daughter Lua was diagnosed with RETINOBLASTOMA in both eyes at 11 months of age.

The cancer was already at an advanced stage and came as a complete shock to us. We had never heard of the disease before. At first, we decided to face the pain in silence and keep the treatment private. However, we soon felt a strong desire to help other families and prevent them from going through what we are experiencing.

In January 2022, we decided to share our story on social media and created the DE OLHO NOS OLHINHOS campaign. Our goal is to raise awareness among families across Brazil about the signs and symptoms of RETINOBLASTOMA and the importance of taking all children to an ophthalmologist once a year, starting in the first year of life.

On this website, you will find information we wish we had had access to, which could have led our daughter to an earlier diagnosis. The sooner retinoblastoma is diagnosed, the greater the chances of successful treatment. Lua continues to receive care from the skilled and compassionate medical team at GRAACC.
